Since 2007, Borromini Institute has partnered with the University of Illinois to provide interdisciplinary study and intern abroad programs in the Spring, Summer and Fall. All courses & the internship are pre-approved by University of Illinois for credits.

University of Illinois Students should apply directly through the LAS International Programs office or their college’s Study Abroad Office.

The Borromini Center, our study center in the heart of Rome, hosts the University of Illinois Rome Branch and as such is the principal point of reference for all University of Illinois students in Italy. Signed by the Provost of the University of Illinois System and authorized by Italian ministries, the agreement facilitates the visa process and as a recognized program and member of AACUPi (Association of American College and University Programs in Italy) for U of I students.
Through agreements with Illinois International and working partnerships with Colleges of LAS, ACES, the Grainger School of Engineering and others, we tailor our semester and summer programs to the curricular needs of Illinois students. Our agreement also opens doors to faculty-led programs with any School in the University interested in establishing a Rome program simply and with full control.
Some examples of past short programs with University of Illinois: ACES Spring 2024, GLCM Engineering and Construction Management 2022, GIES School of Business, MEDIA, ACES, and many more.

Hobart and William Smith Colleges PROGRAMS IN ROME

Hobart and William Smith Colleges logo

Hobart and William Smith Colleges are officially present in Italy through their resident branch at the Borromini Center which as such is the principal point of reference for all HWS students in Italy.

The HWS faculty-led program includes a faculty-led component, which offers one or more courses on art, architecture, sculpture, anthropology, tourism, imaging or travel-writing. The courses vary every semester based on the faculty that leads the program.  Students also take an Italian language and culture course which build upon the foundation of Italian language study completed at HWS prior to the program. A variety of visits to local sites complement in-class instruction and a series of “labs” introduce students to various aspects of Italian culture and society. Students with more advanced Italian skills are placed in an upper-level class.

Students live in shared apartments in the Rome city center experiencing daily Roman life like the majority of Italian university students, which allows them to pass from the status of foreign tourist/student to the more conscious and knowledge “resident” in Rome. HWS students should apply directly through the HWS Global Education Office

Past faculty include Professors Jim Capreedy, Walter Bowyer, Ted Aub, Gabriella D’Angelo, Cheryl Forbes, Patricia and Stan Matthews, Kristen Welsh, Liliana Leopaldi, Kirin Makker, Jeffrey Blankenship, Christine Chin, Michael Tinkler, Nick Ruth, Leah Himmelhoch, Chris Annear, Ben Ristow, Lisa Patti, and Ervin Kosta.
