The Borromini Institute, in collaboration with ArtFiles and Tools for Culture, will be hosting its first Sustainable Public Space Workshop on Tuesday, November 5, 2024.

The workshop will be attended by students and faculty from the California Polytechnic Rome Program in Architecture, the University of Idaho’s Rome Program in Architecture, and other guests. Students will join forces to address questions of urban space, culture, sustainability and morphology of modern cities.

The workshop will include

  1. a session organized by ArtFiles Tools for Culture a session organized by ArtFiles following the “Questiony” methodology
  2. a student exercise in placemaking in a public space near the Borromini Center

What is placemaking? “the people-centered approach to planning and design of public spaces”

Workshop speakers include Tom Rankin (Director of the Borromini Institute), Matt Brehm (Professor of Architecture at University of Idaho), Cultural Economist Michele Trimarchi (IUAV Venezia), Prof. Mark Beirn (University of Illinois Urbana Champagne), Nicole Greco (Tools for Culture), Federica Antonucci, PhD (Art Files) and others.

The students will address their research questions and objectives on the following topics…

  1. Public Urban Space in Auto-centric vs. People-centric Cities: How are human interactions compromised by obstructions to public spaces (cars, roads, delivery vehicles) and distancing created to serve road needs?
  2. Public Space and Social Media: How is the use of public space affected by our digital social platforms?
  3. Public Space and Climate Change: How can public spaces adapt to a changing climate (providing shade, shelter, water management, and natural habitats).
